CORROSION
TESTING
Corrosion is a multi-facet problem which greatly affects material properties and applications. A wide range of corrosion related services can be offered by PINSTECH. These include stress corrosion cracking, determination of corrosion rates, electro-chemical corrosion, static immersion and simulated environment corrosion and high temperature oxidation studies of metals and alloys.
Stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue testing includes determination of various fracture parameters of tensile and compact testing samples. Cortest and instron machines available for this purpose have maximum load capacity of 50 kN, autoclave temperature and pressure of 300oC and 2500 psi, respectively.
Corrosion rates of metals/alloys in aqueous medium can be determined using electrochemical corrosion testing equipment with the help of computerized automatic polarization system.
A salt spray corrosion testing facility is available for neutral and acetic acid salt spray, artificial sea water and copper sulphate accelerated salt spray tests on metals. It is suitable for testing of electroplated coatings of nickel, copper, chromium, zinc, oxide coatings and paints on metals, etc. It is also suitable for the determination of corrosion rates of metals under simulated conditions of sea atmosphere. This could be extremely useful to a industries in coastal areas.
Many other facilities are also available, e.g., high temperature oxidation testing upto 1200oC, general corrosion testing by weight loss method through static immersion and intergranular corrosion testing in boiling nitric acid (Huey tests) and corrosion tests under high pressure and temperature.
SEM studies are used for characterization of corrosion products leading to identification of the cause of corrosion and for the determination of thickness and nature of the coating and surface layers and also for identification of the nature of fracture, identification of extraneous elements, etc.
Mossbauer spectroscopy is used for the analysis of corrosion in industrial products.
