INMOL arranges PAEC Haem Onco Conference-2011

Participants of the first PAEC Haem Onco Conference arranged by INMOL at PC, Bhurban, Murree.

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) is pioneer in utilizing ‘Atom for Peace’ in the region and constantly engaged in providing diagnosis and therapeutic services for medical treatment of cancer. Fourteen state-of-the-art PAEC nuclear medical hospitals are uniformly distributed throughout Pakistan to reduce the sufferings of the ailing humanity and treating cancer patients by radiation sources. Most of the patients are very infirm and belong to poor social strata. They have dismal finances and PAEC has become a hope for treating these patients through radio and chemotherapy, free of cost.

INMOL, an internationally acclaimed Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Centre based in Lahore, renowned for its high standard in terms of quality and patient care, was at the forefront in organizing and arranging a three-day PAEC Haem Onco Conference from October 28-30, 2011 at Pearl Continental, Bhurban, Murree. Dr. Misbah Masood, Director, INMOL played a vital role along with her team in making the event highly successful. This event was initiated with the support of Novartis Oncology.

PAEC Haem Onco Conference was a purely academic forum where intellectuals in the field of oncology from all over Pakistan participated with enthusiasm and appreciation of the initiative. More than four academic sessions were part of the agenda which covered topics such as breast cancer, esophageal cancer, renal cell carcinoma, prostate cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia as part of Continuous Medical Education.

Maj. Gen. (R) Syed Shahid Mukhtar Shah, Member (Admin) and Dr. S. Rafaqat Ali Jafri, DG, (NM&O), PAEC were the guests of honor, whereas, Dr. Naeem Ahmad Laghari, Director, NIMRA, Dr. Abubaker Shahid, Director, PINUM, Dr. Sohail Murad, Director, GINUM and Dr. Javaid Irfan, Director, NORI also participated in the conference .

It was a three-day conference which kept the oncologists attentive throughout the event with its unique contents, highlighting the importance of such academic activities. Participation was seen and appreciated from all over the country including Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Bahawalpur, Multan, Lahore, Abbottabad, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jamshoro, Faisalabad and Rahim Yar Khan. Reputed consultants of Pakistan in Clinical Oncology, Hematology and Surgery such as Professor Manzoor Zaidy, Dr. Huma Majeed Khan, Professor Ejaz Hussain Shah, Dr. Nadeem Abbasi, Brig. Dr. Naeem Naqi, Dr. Qasim Bhuttor and many other were present in the event. The response generated from this conference was tremendously positive. Internationally acclaimed Pakistan's Oncologists addressed and successfully engaged an audience of more than 70 doctors. A scientific quiz was also conducted in which the oncologists eagerly participated and highly informative questions and answers helped in properly concluding each session at the end.

This conference can be viewed as a first step of its kind from a PAEC forum in encouraging intellectuals to meet, collaborate, exchange their ideas and create new avenues to help patients from all walks of life especially the non-affording ones in Pakistan. These kinds of extensively participated and widely accepted academic events should be held regularly for medical community to mutually collaborate and share current state of knowledge.
