PINSTECH organizes conference on “Recent Trends in Chemistry”

As part of worldwide activities being carried out on UN Year of Chemistry, PINSTECH organized three days conference on “Recent Trends in Chemistry” which was inaugurated on October 17, 2011 at PINSTECH, Islamabad.

United Nations has declared 2011 as ‘Year of Chemistry’ with the special mention of award of second Nobel Prize to Madame Marie Curie in 1911 in Chemistry and earlier one in Physics in 1903. The theme also highlighted the contribution of women in various sciences, especially Chemistry.

The conference attracted 119 scientists from research and academia, and deliberations continued for three days. The event was jointly organized by PINSTECH, Nuclear Fuel Cycle Division of PAEC and NCP.

The moot was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rasul Jan, Vice Chancellor Malakand University. In his inaugural address, he emphasized the role of Chemistry in synthesizing and shaping the world, which we inhabit and in fulfilling our requirements. It has given us the materials which we need. He also made special mention of the research activities undertaken by PINSTECH in liaison with Universities and Research Institutions.

The opening session was also marked by a keynote lecture by Mr. Muhammad Naeem, Member (Fuel Cycle), PAEC. He talked about the activities and achievements of PAEC in the fields of research, education, nuclear power production, health, agriculture and human resource development.

At the conclusion of the inaugural session, Dr. Badar Suleman, Member (Science), PAEC dwelled on the theme of the complementarities and integration of various sciences towards the needs and progress of the humanity.
Dr. Jamshed H. Zahidi, DG, PINSTECH, in his welcome address presented the summary of the sessions of the conference and objectives of the event.

Dr. Muhammad Mufazzal Saeed, Head, Chemistry Division, was the Coordinator of the Conference.

It may be recalled that PINSTECH is the premier research institute of the PAEC engaged in Research and Development in Nuclear Science and Technology in collaboration with various International Scientific Organizations including IAEA of which it is the Regional Resource Unit. It has also played very significant role in PAEC programme and in assisting the National Industry.
