Nuclear Medicine is a specialized branch of medicine that deals with the use of unsealed, short-lived radioisotopes for diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Nuclear Medicine techniques are non-invasive, relatively inexpensive and safe and yield quick results. The radioisotopes which are commonly used include Technitium-99m and Iodine-131. Generally, the former is used to label various pharmaceuticals preparing compounds termed as radiopharmaceuticals. After intravenous administration these radiopharmaceuticals have specific target organ localization that makes imaging possible on gamma cameras.

The gamma cameras have on-line computers with state-of-the-art technology to conduct following procedures

  1. Study the physiology of various organs and organ systems.

  2. Dynamic studies to assess blood flow to particular organs.

  3. Diagnosing diseases in various organs and localization of lesions like inflammation, cysts, tumors, trauma and infaraction etc.
