Diagnostic Radiology Unit
This unit offers following services for indoor as well as outdoor patients, which are tremendously helpful in the diagnosis and management of the patients and save a lot of expenditure for the entitled patients.
-
Plain Radiographs (x-rays)
-
Radiographs with contrast media
-
Ultrasonography: NORI is equipped with state-of-the-art Color Doppler ultrasound machine. Ultrasonographic assessment of patients, especially for staging of cancers is generally carried out.
-
Mammography: Mammograms can be very useful in early detection of breast cancer. Mammography unit is being used routinely for the detection and screening of patients with various breast diseases.
MAMMOGRAPHY AND SCREENING FOR A BREAST LUMP
Mammography is taking plain x-rays of female breasts. This is a painless procedure (done like a chest x-ray) to ascertain the presence of suspicious lump in the breast or to determine the apparent nature of a palpable lump in the female breast. These x-rays are then reviewed by trained doctors and radiologists to conclude about the presence or absence of a lump and its likely nature.
Mammography is recommended as a screening investigation for detection of breast lump in the general female population. Any female having the age of 40 years and above should undergo mammography once every year.
The objective is to detect incidentally growing small lumps in one or both breasts that are not palpable (can not be felt with hands).
On detection of a lump on a mammogram (x-ray of breast), some other investigations are conducted to exclude the possibility of a caner. In this way mammography helps in the detection of unprecedented cancer in the middle aged female population. Mammography is not generally recommended for young females and especially in lactating mothers.
