Self-Reliance
Operating
a nuclear power plant without vendor support and negligible industrial
resources within the country was a big challenge. KANUPP responded to
this by embarking on a path to a self-reliant programme. Tremendous
efforts were made to mobilize the local resources and establish in-house
facilities necessary to support plant operation. In order to achieve
this objective, following divisions were created within the plant.
-
Computer
Development Division (CDD) -- For long term solution of
computing control and instrumentation problems.
-
Mechanical
Design & Development Division (D&D) -- For local
design and manufacture of precision and custom made mechanical
components.

An Indigenously Fabricated Pressure Tube Transfer Flask
-
KANUPP
Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering (KINPOE) -- For imparting
specific training to engineers and technicians in basic nuclear
technology.
-
Control
and Instrumentation Application Laboratory (CIAL) -- For
in-house dynamic verification of pressure, temperature, flow and
level instruments under plant conditions.

Test Rig at CI
-
In-Plant
Training Centre (IPTC) -- For providing advanced training to
engineers and technicians leading to operating license for KANUPP.
-
In-Service
Inspection (ISI) & NDT Laboratory -- For nondestructive
testing, evaluation and inspection of plant components.

Erosion / Corrosion Data Acquisition Mock-Up

-
Technical
Division (TD) -- For providing effective technical support in
the field of design changes, modifications, reactor chemistry and
nuclear material control.
-
Health
Physics Division (HPD) -- For ensuring effective implementation
and control of radiological protection measures and for minimizing
personnel radiation dose.

Lifting of Turbine Rotor for Overhaul
KANUPP’s
role in the country has been much more than operating a power plant. It
has helped scientists, engineers and technicians of PAEC to gain
valuable experience in the sophisticated field of nuclear power
technology and related disciplines.
